Game modes for Protostrike

We started making a "Bomb"- game mode for Protostrike. We thought it would be a fun game mode with strategic key elements to winning the match.  To find the perfect setup we tried many different things and discussed every option we had. Before telling what we came up with, let's go through parts of the process.

One of the many things we discussed was respawning. Should player respawn or get eliminated to raise the stakes? Depending what we decided, it would impact the entire match. With respawn, one longer match would be enough but with elimination, we needed several rounds. When playing, we noticed two things. First off, elimination lowered the intensity of the game due to being afraid to get killed and lose the match. The second thing was no matter if we had respawned or not, the fight always happened at the same place. The solution, we thought, was the map.

We tried many different map variants. We played around with timers on the bomb point. Was it enough time to plant a bomb and still have a chance to defuse it? When we put up doors to capture/open before reaching the bomb point we noticed it didn’t really do anything for the game mode. The fight was still restricted to the bomb area since defenders didn’t gain anything on moving from it. Meanwhile, for attackers, the doors were only something that slowed down the match since no major fight happened around the area that affected the outcome. We tested with several bomb points combined with doors, and without doors. We tried changing the maps again.

No matter what we did we finally realized the game mode didn’t work for Protostrike. At least not now. It may be a perfect mode later but not in this state.

If I may say so, and I will because I’m proud of my teammates for the way they handled this, now we really showed our strength. Working with a game mode for so long and then now be able to use it can be a real bummer. Instead of moping around about it, we managed to turn one game mode into two new ones.

This might be a long post to tell you we have two new game modes under development for Protostrike, but my hope is that it will give you an understanding for how it can be working with games and why updates take time.

Now, back on the game modes. The new work name we have for the new game modes are “Domination” and “Assault”. The first one is a pretty common game mode in multiplayer games. You capture a point and get a score when holding it. The team with the highest score at the end, or the first to reach a certain amount of points first, wins. To get the intense feeling Protostrike is known for, we added up to 4 points to keep the player moving around and engage in battles. here we can probably save time by using existing maps and adust them to suit the puropse. The second one, “Assault”, is a linear match where attackers need to capture zones to move forward to a bomb point to win. Sounds like the previous bomb mode I mentioned? Well, in our world this is a completely different mode since the combat takes place in different areas.

One of the maps we're currently working on for the game mode we call "Assault".

The second map we're working with for the game mode we call "Assault".

Now it is unclear if both game modes will be in Protostrike when we update the soft launch version, and with how many maps. If a game mode doesn't get done in time, we will offer it as a future update.

The common denominator for our game modes is the possibility to play different roles. I’ll end this post here and if you read the previous sentence again, you might have a clue what the next post will be about.

Thank you for reading!
